Just a short walk south of American Legion Highway along the Bread and Cheese Brook are the remains of a dramatic granite bridge. Take a walk and imagine the granite bridge as it was in 1900. Imagine the mill sites it connected and the pace of the place back then.
The Brookside property is made up of two parcels along the Bread and Cheese Brook. The parcel with frontage along the American Legion Highway was purchased in 2009 thanks to the generous support of the Town’s Community Preservation Fund (CPA), a grant from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, and private donations. The northern parcel provides the gateway to a previously landlocked five-acre parcel already owned by WLCT.
The two properties will be managed together as the eight-acre Brookside Conservation Area, the northern- most publicly accessible open space owned by WLCT in Westport – and the first publicly accessible frontage on the Bread and Cheese Brook. The Land Trust is working to prepare trails and hopes to formally open this property in the near future. In the meantime, feel free to explore the banks of Bread and Cheese Brook and listen to the rushing white water at your feet.
